2011 Fall MMA Class writing assignmentFiled Under: Classes, Local
This semester many students have the opportunity/requirement of a kick-butt writing assignment. For those whom it is required, you know who you are.
Anyway, here are the ground rules.
You need to watch one of the fights from the TV show, The Ultimate Fighter (fights can be seen here). You could arbitrarily pick one or select one of the top ten fights from TUF – video above has snippets from each fight.
After watching, I want you to write a brief analysis (at least 200 words but no more than 400). The analysis should have a summary of what happened (only a few sentences), analysis of key elements that determined victory and your favorite moments with your explanation of why you liked those parts.
The main focus should be the various elements that you believe determined the fight. What techniques seemed to be most dominant? Striking? Grappling? Conditioning? How might the loser have improved his performance? What made this fight interesting to you?
Draw on your own experience with various techniques while you comment. Don’t fuss about being technical or ultra-knowledgeable. Speak from the heart with and edit once for grammar. Limited usage of slang and industry-standard terms is okay, but if your response reads like a comment on Youtube, I will likely stalk you down and beat you with a rubber hose. (Flexibility will be provided for non-native-English speaking students).
Post your assignment below, using your first name and last initial, listing the fight you watched before the body of your work. This is to be finished before 12/12/11.

my best fight of them all is the fight between scot smith and pete sell. these guys where standing all the time they didn’t do any ground games. they where very technical in their standing but sometimes it shows as if it was a street fight. i liked hot pete sell would take some hard punished in the face and still keep his hands up and cover his face and also always throws low leg kicks that did a lot of damage to scott smith. the end of the fight was my favorite when scott smith took a punch on his liver thats when pete put his guard down and didn’t expect a cross punch from scott.

if you ask anyone about the UFC or what it is, they would recognize it when you mention the forrest griffin and stephan bonner fight. this fight brought the MMA to another level. it made me interested in the MMA WORLD by just watching a one round of this fight. these fighters are both winners in my opinion. they showed a lot of heart, determination and techniques. these guys bleed to the last minute and if we gave therm more time they won’t stop killing each other.

my favorite fight of the top ten fights the one between scott smith and pete sell. these two fighters had a lot of heart and conditioning. they dint stop throwing jabs all fight and till the end. i liked how pete sell was raising his hands all the time and covering his face although scott smith didn’t stop to throw jabs and cross punches to his face and most of them where effective in hurting him.
On the other hand, pete gave scott a good swollen leggy kicking low kicks to his leg. these low leg kicks are very effective in slowing down scott and stoping his striking. the anticipation pete showed in this fight was great, he waits for sometime to deliver a good combination of punches. the grappling in the fight was ok. and was more aggressive from smith. the end of the fight was my greatest part. i always liked for pete sell covered his face but when he punched smith in the liver it was his chance to knock him out, but he dropped his hand and got caght with a punch in the face .

Diego Brandao Vs. Bryan Caraway
Right off the bat bryan goes for a takedown. They start grappling and bryan goes for the knee into Diego. They break a part but i feel if bryan kept the hold on diego and kept going for some knees and better control, he couldve done more damage. Bryan goes for another takedown and diego counters it very well by sprawling back on his legs. Diego continually goes for the kick. Bryan takes it a couple of times but i think he could counter it with a catch or something. Diego keeps going for it so bryan could anticipate it the next time he throws it. Diego end up winning when he gets bryan to the ground and gets top control. he starts laying down the punches straight to bryans head. the fight continues but you can already tell from here that diego is going to win it. diego had more energy, was using better techniques and went for the open hits. bryan wasnt protecting himself that well. It seemed he kind of gave up at parts of the fight. bryan could have won if he got diego to the ground and go for a submission. it seemed diego wanted to stay on his feet and off the ground. It wasnt too great of a fight. diego dominated pretty much the whole time and bryan just didnt seem with it.

Bryan Caraway vs. Diego Brandao
This fight was one of those fights that make you think, “Where are the fundamentals?” The fight ended in the first round, giving Brandao the victory by a TKO. Caraway, from what I can tell from the fight was primarily trying to wrestle the dominant kick boxer, Brandao to the ground but ended up getting pulverized in the end. Throughout the fight, Caraway’s only three tactics were easily able to spot and were done with poor execution. He only tries throwing an overhand right, shooting for a double leg take down, and tries to knee in the clench (with as much power as a three year old). On the other hand, Brandao comes into the fight with a lot of confidence, but also not too confident, which is always good in a fight. He starts the fight throwing nice outside leg kicks that look strong enough to break small trees, which you can see start to take a real effect on Caraway. At about 2 left in the fight, Brandao nails a nice left hook to Caraway’s jaw, making him stumble back towards the cage. Brandao expertly follows this up with a massive flying knee right to Caraway’s face sending him down. After what seems like 50+ hits by Brandao, while Caraway is half fighting off a coma and also defending himself from Brandao’s strikes. The referee finally calls the fight, leaving Diego the winner.
With Bryan’s earlier wins in the ultimate fighter, I think he could’ve won the fight if he would’ve remembered some things he was taught. When he tries throwing knees, he pauses in motion for the hit, thereby not making it flow through with a nice, solid strike, which with his opportunity to send a knee, could’ve helped him win.
Something I thought was interesting was that at 50 seconds left in the fight, Caraway falls on his face trying to square back up to Brandao. I thought it was ridiculous that the ref allowed the fight to continue for so long after Caraway was so badly injured.

Scott Smith vs. Pete Sell
This fight was almost stand. It was just like boxing, it was not like usual MMA. They were technically good by their standing fight. Pete Sell got received some hard punches, but he was covering his face. However, he used many low leg kicks which bothered Scott Smith. The game was ended by Pete Sell when he gave Scott Smith punches on his liver and a cross punch.

Jon Jones vs Lyoto Machida. It was obvious from the beggining of the fight that lyoto was intimidated by jon. However, jon was still keeping distance by just throwing kicks at lyoto. In my opinion, lyoto kept a defence strategy until he gets really close to jon and thats when he starts throwing punches. Obviously that did not help him. After he was taken down to the ground with a double leg, the elbow he took in the forehead gave me an insight of who’s going to win in the fight. That elbow exhausted lyoto to the extent where he was choked by a beginner’s choke. It was obvious that jon had the lead in the fight. Overall, the fight was okay but i have seen much better fights

Martin Krampmann vs. Crafton Wallace
The fight started out at a really fast pace and Wallace started immediately with a combination of high kicks and some low leg kicks. Krampmann blocks a high kick followed by a solid uppercut and gets the 2 legged take down into side control. Wallace is on his back and kicks away from the fence towards the center of the ring so Krampmann can’t use it against him. Krampmann gets into a half guard with his strong emphasis in mui tai he is able to control the ground game entirely. Krampmann gets wallace back into side control and ties Wallace’s hands up and drops elbows. Wallace goes for a reversal to get onto his knees, however Krampmann gets on his back and starts solid strikes on the side of Wallace’s head. Krampmann gets the rear naked choke to win it. The fight came down to pure grappling and clearly Krampmann dominated the ground game along with conditioning. I think Wallace could be a little lighter on his feat at the start and worked in safer stand up. After he through a few high kicks Krampmann had his strategy all figured out and played his strengths.
