Advancing Foot Sweep, Pandas and Lyoto MachidaFiled Under: Instruction, Rantings
It’s late, I’m feeding my newborn baby and I could swear I just saw a panda throw De Ashi Harai – the advancing foot sweep.
Of course, we know this is an Egyptian ad for some cheese but I believe the voice over at the end translates directly to “Eat this cheese or a panda will judo-sweep your shopping cart like a rag doll.” To verify the Panda’s skills, I find the following:
Yep, that panda totally did throw the advancing foot sweep. Kung Fu Panda did not lie: animals know their Judo/Kung Fu.
Lest we think this move is strictly for members of the endangered species list and old men, I refer you to Lyoto Machida, who has pulled this move off a number of times in MMA. Below, he gives a few pointers on the foot sweeps he likes to throw.
Just thought you should know.

First off, as always, I love your writing style. nothing like a Panda-shopping cart confrontation to make this a more interesting discussion.
However, with all due respect to Lyoto, what he is showing here is a sad bastardization of De Ashi Harai. As Lyoto shows his usage of it, he forces the opponent to shift weight to the back foot then attacks the front one. The problem with this (and the reason it is not correct) is that if the opponent has sufficient weight on the rear foot, sweeping the front one may very well not take them down. They will just remain standing on the rear foot.
In the other video however, you can see the the opponent is about the plant the front foot… They have committed to it, and need it to land or they will fall. This is when the sweep is effective. It’s a similar concept to when a Ouchi Gari is most effective as well: Whent he opponent is about to plant the leg being attacked, and has already committed their momentum/weight (Kazushi in Judo) to the effort.

Steve -
I dig your analysis, and agree from a judo stand point.
Truth be told, I put Lyoto’s vid up for reasons beyond his judo narrative. While I can’t fully explain it, I’ve been watching a lot of kickboxing recently (WAR Ernesto Hoost and Rob Kaman!) and love when guys thai kick a guy off his feet. Or maybe I like Machida’s little-kid haircut.

I love the panda sweep. I like when humor is added into a post, makes it a lot more interesting indeed. From my standpoint, its minimal requirement for movement makes it ideal and effective especially when used properly.

Really liked Machida’s video, but the panda’s “stir the stuff around on the floor move” after he dumped the cart cracked me up.
