The University of Utah has two Jujitsu classes taught twice a week in the mornings. The class number us ESSF 1420, sections one and two. See this page at the university web site for details. The focus for this semester will be mastery of the fundamentals. I’m expecting all levels of students to acquire a firm, usable Jujitsu toolbox of the basic moves. Hopefully, students will be able to perform these moves under heavy stress and resistance because their technical mastery is so good.
Unfortunately, mentor and friend, Sensei Jorge will be moving down to California to take care of his aging parents. I have the utmost respect for a man who puts family first. I’m sad to see him go, and wish the best for him. He will be missed.
However, Sensei Jorge has instructed me to take over the classes, so there will be no change in terms of times and dates. I’ve been preparing a lot of new things for students, to make these classes even more exciting and informative. As always, keep checking SLC MMA for techniques and videos to improve your skills. I am honored to be allowed to teach and train with you.

I’m very excited about this fall’s upcoming mixed marital arts class. I’d like to highlight a few things – even though this class is taught through the University of Utah you don’t have to be a student to join the class. In fact, even if you are a student, it’s much cheaper to take the directly through the department, outside of your class schedule. Even so, it’s awesome to think you can get university credit for learning MMA.
This class is designed to be a solid introduction to mixed martial arts techniques, and will focus on the fundamentals. If you’ve watched some MMA and wanted to try it out, this class is perfect for you. All of us will be have different backgrounds – some have blackbelts and others have no martial art training whatsoever. Certainly, if you have some knowledge and expertise, bring that to the table to respectfully share with your fellow students but don’t worry if you’re new to the whole thing. In class we are training partners – not competitors.
My primary concern while training at the university is SAFETY. As an instructor and a student, I want to train, teach, and learn injury free – for a long time. We will have a lot of fun grappling, but at the university class will not include striking in our sparring sessions. We ABSOLUTELY will learn striking – we just will not be applying “ground and pound” to our fellow students. My hope is that everyone will leave class as pretty (or ugly) as they showed up.
Right now, we only have one section. If enough people sign up early, we’ll open another section.

Here is a little information about the self defense class at the University of Utah I’m teaching. If you can make it, sign up and join me. It should be lots of fun and very informative, especially if you’ve never had any self defense training before.
My hope is that students will walk out of the class feeling more confident that they can handle themselves fairly well if crap goes down. Student’s aren’t going to be ultimate fighters after one semester, taking on assassins in their sleep or anything, but I aim to help improve their skills as much as possible.
To become really solid in terms of self-defense, you have to have skills integrated on the subconscious level – and the entry level to that is probably 3-6 months of frequent training. There’s no better time to start training than now.
Let’s start training!
