Also, I just want to plug in Matt Serra's fight in UFC 98 - did you notice how he immediately dropped into an aggressive guard, trying to pull off RG? I think we'll see a lot more of that.

Shaun,

Good questions.

First of all, HUGE DISCLAIMER. My experience and knowledge about Rubber Guard comes from two books and 3-4 hours on online video training. Yes, I've used it. No I've never had official, person to person instruction. So take my opinion accordingly.

Yes, I think the rubber guard is effective in no gi-jujitsu. I like the way it is controlling and calculated, essentially forcing submission opportunities. While there is still a sense of novelty in the system, I do believe Eddie Bravo has added a legitimate branch to the tree of jujitsu. From my thoughts and hearing Eddie talk about it, rubber guard is blue/purple belt + stuff. You need to know your arm bars, escapes, chokes, positions, etc before rubber guard really should come into view.

About Eddie Bravo - I think he's a character. I don't agree with him at all in his liberal weed-smoking world view, but I from what I've seen I think he's a good instructor and he's got some good material. I get the sense that he's probably a decent individual, but I'll pass on an ad hominem argument when it comes to his stuff.

I think the book "Mastering The Rubber Guard" is pretty solid. It opened my eyes to half guard, among other things. It's publisher, Victory Belt, puts out high quality stuff. The production is nicely colored, organized, and explained. Frankly, however, some of the material is lost on me due to the fact I'm not even a white belt in rubber guard.

If you're interested in RG, go ahead and pick up a copy ($25-30) - they carry it at Barnes and Noble occasionally. As an instructor, I don't mind if you dabble and explore, as long as you're drilling the essential basics and rubber guard is seen as extra credit.

As for the meaning of 10th planet name, I have no idea.

Hey Bart, I was wondering what your opinion is on the 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu system since above you mentioned the rubber guard going mainstream. I think it looks very appealing, but is it truly effective? What do you think about the books on the rubber guard and the twister? It seems cool, but I have some issues with its founder being more into Marijuana than his own art form. Also, what does the 10th Planet name mean? Thanks,
